We do something similar; we do TV one night a week, either Friday or Saturday. It took the value out of TV because it isn't related to behavior, but it is intentional. When you said all the behavior changes you note I was going Yes! That's exactly what's happening at my house! Unfortunately it can't be connected to Halloween candy but it helps knowing someone else is experiencing it too!

It's always on edge with the TV.
We habe no tablets or other technical stuff..besides cell phones. And that "category" phones kind of annoys me. Because almost everybody expects you to have a cell phone. So that they could call you anytime. And I am so done with it….but I feel it's almost impossible in out society to live without it. Cause if you do, you are kind of having difficulties to do stuff.

And with the TV thing sometimes it goes well with my daughter, but sometimes…like you mentioned…she starts crying after a movie is over. Or she is getting a bit moody, if she isn't allowed to watch. But that really depends…I haven't figured out on what it depends yet…but I'm trying my best to do so.

I'm crossing my fingers for your new routine, that it lasts as long as it's good for you and your family. You definitely inspired my…again!

Keep on going Elle!💛

I love how confident you are with your decision. You are so right about our kids being over stimulated. A very reputable parenting expert once said " spending time with your kid is the best present". Loved how you spoke you your son and his response. You are a fantastic mom!

Elle! First of all, I was so moved by the way you explained addiction to Ford. It was so thoughtful, Christ-centered, and wonderfully age appropriate. Second, it's really amazing how capable children are when adults like yourself are authentic with them, take the time to explain things, and include them in decisions. THANK YOU FOR SHARING!

We just implemented this in our house. We noticed major behavioral problems with our 3 year old so we are limiting it to once a week as well. We are really hoping it makes a difference.

What a simple yet perfect way to explain addiction to a child OR adult. You made me rethink certain habits in my life that I would have never considered to be addictions but are truly taking up space. ❤

December 14, 2019

Our TV is never on any more. If I want to watch something it is hand picked YouTube. I love that you are a very thoughtful parent. I have one issue…why didn’t you choose to display the red side of the paper sometimes, prettier than the white…lol🐨🇦🇺

I'm not sure the best place to post this question so you will see it and maybe be able to answer. My bff just gave birth to my neice on Tuesday. This is her second baby and she is breastfeeding again. The first time was so painful she strictly pumped. I telling her that you had used something to help with Brighton and you had said there was no pain. Can you tell me either what video it was or what the item was you had used? Thanks.

My husband and I just had this talk. Our internet was recently down for 5 days. Where we live that means, no cell phones, no you tube, no tv, no anything. We absolutely loved it. Our kids loved it. So we cancelled all streaming services, put timers on apps, and decided when my husband comes home our cells go away we have a land line, and a dvd player and that's enough. So far its lead to a happier household for us ! We Love it !

I am loving this type of video. Very insightful. I am having struggles with my toddler too. It is my fault because I am so busy and I used TV as her babysitter. I am starting to minimize her screen time.

I have an 11, 8 and 6 year old, we don't watch TV during the week and on the weekend they each pick one show. They're just so much happier that way, even though they're older they still behaved the same way when the TV was turned off so we've been doing this for months and I love it. Our house has so much more peace in it.

I really like how you explained addiction to Ford. I think I need to have that discussion with my 4 year old about his leap pad. I’m also one of those who’s loving your new channel direction 👏 Great job, Elle!

I suffer from GAD too and, to be honest, I enjoy any content you put out. You sooth my savage beast.

My family is in the US and I am expecting a TON of clothes for Amelia (our 6month old)… I will only see them once or twice a year, we will be going there in June. I have been told "Be sure to bring those space safer bags"… NO… That is all I can say… I don't want to be rude, but we will be driving and I do NOT want to load up my car with clothes for a baby, she will have many other gifts I'm sure, if she gets too many things, I will be donating to the nearest thriftstore (or returning, if there's gift receipts, to repurchase something more useful, like some educational type toy)
I love that people want to get her things, but I honestly had so many clothes the first 6 months of her life and she outgrew things super quickly (she had 3 NB items and only wore them once or twice before she was just in 0-3month. It was stressful, because I felt like I SHOULD get pictures of her in all the outfits to share with the person that bought her those clothes. To get her to wear everything I was having to change her outfit NUMEROUS times a day, it was just so… unneccesary in so many ways.
My sister loves thrifting too, which is great… but for the price she gets things for so goes WAYYY overboard. I have told her as nicely as possible that we are starting the "1 weeks worth of clothes" rule, which I know will still be slightly over, which is fine… I just don't want to have enough clothes to cloth triplets, I only have one baby girl she really does NOT NEED a huge wardrobe.
I also have not 1, but 4 "Baby's First Christmas Ornaments"… it really bothers me, personally, I feel like it should be the child's parents that go out and find that (or any other "Baby's First _____"), something that means something to them, fits their style, etc. Or at the very least, call/message the parents to ask "Would you like me to get this ornament I found?"

I'm sorry for the large comment/rant… It just seems like there's one person specifically in my family that either don't ask us what we need, or they just don't care. Said person almost feels like they are trying to take over as a parent to my baby, it's less about being generous, thoughtful, caring… it's coming off as something else.

This is exactly what we have been experiencing with my daughter. She's so addicted to her tablet. I find in the past when we would punish her from her tablet her behavior would start to improve. Glad to know I'm not alone in this battle however I think it will be extremely challenging to change our lifestyle habits. I really need to start with having more time restrictions.

December 14, 2019

I haven’t had the chance to say that I am really enjoying your new videos. They are a nice, encouraging part of my day now! We haven’t fully cut out TV, but have reduced a bit. We don’t allow any video games at all. And we don’t allow TV for my school kids on Monday-Thursday. My three year old, however, watches a morning show and an afternoon show every weekday. I rely on that to help me clear my head and for when I need to lay the baby down for his afternoon nap. The downside for me is the nagging and questions about when he is going to watch his next show 😫 His days do seem to revolve around the TV. I have such mixed feelings about it.

We had the same issues with sugar and with watching TV.
Love your new direction. 💖

December 14, 2019

I notice the same thing with my boys. We have better days when we don't have the tv on all day, but tv is part of our bedtime routine. We watch a 20 minute show before books and tuck in. The show before bedtime allows my boys to be still and calm down. We have been doing that for 4 years. When I had my twins, bedtime was a nightmare with my oldest who was 2 at the time. The show helped so much to make bedtime smooth, so I try a couple times a week to not have tv except for bedtime show.

We are screen free. We do have the odd film day. My kids are 6 and 2. But yes, they definitely play more and have deeper imaginations than when my eldest was younger and we had TV

We do the amazon wish list as well. We have done it since my oldest was a baby 3 years ago and it has been so wonderful! The kids never get anything they won’t really play with. Everyone I give it to always loves the suggestions because no one wastes their money, and the kids get things they actually want…. it’s a win win!

Definitely need to try the no tv idea. The tv takes up so much room during the days for not only my son but for me as well. So I think both me and my son would benefit from this experiment!!

Your boys have accepted because of the way you and Dan have brought them up. Well adjusted and respectful kids.
I no longer have little ones in the house, but it would be nice to take the tv away from husband. Lol

Impressive wrapping skills, Elle. I'm loving all your new material and really appreciate such clear-cut examples of how you speak to the boys about these important issues. So glad that your finger is doing so well! Question, what happened to giving back to the community from income earned through social? I always enjoyed that section of your channel. I remember especially the one you did with the at-risk women's shelter. Watching you fill those backpacks was heartwarming. (I may be mixing two together.) I definitely think that that fits in with your ethos. (Ethoses, accepted plural)

We are thinking we will do experiences instead of gifts next year. Like talking all of our kids and grandkids to a cabin for a weekend . My daughter said our kids don’t need more stuff but could use a night in a hotel with a pool to break up the winter. Takes the pressure off of everyone.🌲❄️❤️

December 14, 2019

I love that you guys have the lists available- but you also have open and grateful hearts toward family that wants to buy other or more presents. I think there are some minimalists that overlook relationships with family and close friends, by being so adamant about their minimalist preferences- and then being rude and hurtful over (really quite insignificant in the long haul) Christmas presents… and that makes me sad. I really enjoyed this!!

December 14, 2019

I wasn’t too sure how this video was going to come across, but I think you made lovely points. I also put the TV on when attempting to make dinner… SO what do you do now that they don’t have TV. I try not to have it on otherwise during the day (the noise from it drives me crazy), but a 3.5 and a VERY needy 1.5 year old on my legs while I’m cooking with hot pots and pans on a stove makes me so anxious!!

I’m SO GLAD you didn’t show your finger!!! It was hard enough listening to your description!!!!

December 14, 2019

I actually stopped watching TV for the most part because because my roomies and I couldn’t afford cable in college. I realized that most shows aren’t that interesting. I have a few things I still watch, but I can live without a tv. It’s a good habit to start young.

My family sets a gift for each kid and all we do is give the parent the money for said gift and they put our name on it. while its not… personal… I like my gifts to come from MY heart, it does give those parents the control of what goes into their home and their kids lives and I respect that so I follow their rules.

Also the way you are limiting TV is great and honestly something I want to take with me when I have kiddos. I'd love an update! Whenever you have something to add or that you changed bc I think the way you explained it and are going about it is such a great thing.

Me and my husband have been cable free since 2014. I have no use for it, we both work 10 hour days and by the time we get home, take care of our dogs, shower and eat then it’s time to go to bed. We use the extra $250 USD a month to save for travel because experiences > Cable.

Joy Shoe
December 14, 2019

YES! candy, holidays, tv it ALL I think, directly affects behavior! We had our kiddos pick about a weeks worth of candy from why they got and then they put the rest in a bag and we put it out for “switch witch” and she came and took the candy and left a non candy treat. it went over SO WELL and we didn’t have the candy crash or even the begging for more candy through the week. I felt like it helped so much especially because after Halloween it’s school breaks and then more holidays and out of routine days filled also with more screen time. It never clicked for us until we did the switch witch this year 🤦🏻‍♀️

I love your channel. It’s so refreshing and this is absolutely something I needed. I think I’m going to make an amazon wishlist and try the tv. My kiddo always has a meltdown when he’s been watching tv and I tell him it’s time to go to bed. Keep up the great videos! ❤️
